Gold – a precious metal, the Midas touch, all that glitters is not gold – it is just amazing where your mind takes you when you start thinking about something – money, coins, gold bullion, the opposite – silver, rich, poor, winning the lotto, dollar signs oh I ran them all through. Then I was coming back from somewhere with my friend – driving up the island and we came to Oyster Bay just as the sun started to set and there it was GOLD. The sun was huge that evening and the ocean was dripping with the many varieties of the gold light. It was contrasted with the deepening blue of the sky and the ocean.
Somehow I had to capture that. I did a bit of thread painting in gold to hold down the various strips of fabrics that reminded me of the sunset. I had some gold pieces of plastic that I held in place with organza that I hope gave my piece the sparkle of the evening.

Princess Margaret once said. “I have about as much privacy as a goldfish in a bowl.”
This quote and goldfish make me smile. They swim around and around and never get tired or complain. They can live for 10 years and remember things for 3 months. How simple is that?
I chose to do a simple tessellation pattern. Each goldfish is decorated with stitches from my new machine. The grandchildren added faces to some of them. We decided that we needed water, hence the netting.
‘Simple and cute’ was the comment about this project.

When I heard the new theme Gold I immediately thought of Gustav Klimt, one of my favorite artists. He uses gold leaf in quite a few of his paintings. I chose the painting ‘Tree of Life’ to do a small version in fabric. I put some gold fabric paint in a squirt bottle, drew some swirls on freezer paper that I pressed on the back of muslin, put it on a light box fabric side up and squirted the paint onto the swirl pattern that shone through. I then fused the tree and leaves on and did the blossoms free motion.

For the first weeks after the topic “gold” was suggested, I kept coming back to the theme that “all that glitters is not gold” and thought that would be what I would attempt. Many hours later, I knew that I had no idea how I could interpret this, so…………..back to the drawing board.
I then settled on the idea of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but that changed during the execution of the project. My finished work shows a rainbow completely surrounding the silhouette of a head and is my way of saying that many of us seem to be looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow without realizing that we’re completely surrounded by rainbow all the time.
The colours of the rainbow are raw edge appliquéd and each one is satin stitched with a different decorative thread and it would be an understatement to say that accomplishing this was frustrating at times! But, they say it’s good to persevere to learn, don’t they? The silhouette in the centre is hand appliquéd.

I suggested the gold theme and had two or three ideas of what I could do. Then one day I saw a fellow who reminded me of the disco era and “In all his Glory” is the result.
I had a lot of fun making this little silver lame shirt. I crocheted all the gold chains from various gold threads. I had never used Angelina Fiber before and will probably always think of chest hair when I use it again.
